Browser login in the VS Code extension

Log out of the CircleCI Visual Studio Code extension and sign in again with the browser. The token is stored outside settings.json.

The CircleCI Visual Studio Code extension can sign in through the browser on CircleCI Cloud. To replace a personal API token, log out and sign in again. Choose Log in with your browser. Leave the existing token in place until you confirm that nothing else uses it.

The extension stores the login in the secret storage for VS Code. settings.json has no field for the token or the sign-in method. The Runs panel title bar and right-click menus do not include log out.

Update the CircleCI extension from the VS Code Marketplace if CircleCI: Log Out or Log in with your browser is missing. Browser login is available on CircleCI Cloud. On CircleCI Server, sign in with a personal API token.

Log out and sign in with the browser

  1. Open the Command Palette and run CircleCI: Log Out.

  2. Select the CircleCI icon on the Activity Bar. The Runs panel shows Log in.

  3. Select Log in with your browser.

  4. Complete the prompt in the browser. VS Code shows Logging in to CircleCI… while that finishes.

The same sign-in list also offers Use a personal API token and Log in to a CircleCI Server. For Server, enter the server URL and a personal API token.

Use the Accounts menu

  1. Open the Accounts menu in VS Code (the person icon).

  2. Under CircleCI, select Sign out.

  3. Sign in to CircleCI again from that menu and select Log in with your browser.

A personal API token appears as a CircleCI account in that menu, the same as a browser login. The menu keeps one CircleCI account. Sign out to change the method.

After you change the login

The extension stops using the personal API token. Keep the token if the CircleCI CLI or another tool still uses it. When nothing else needs it, delete it under User Settings > Personal API Tokens.
